Metro Platform Safety System Prototype

Metro Platform Safety System Prototype

A camera-based detection prototype that monitors metro platforms for yellow-line breaches, helping prevent accidents and improve passenger safety.

Metro Yellow Line Detection System for Platform Safety

Crowded metro platforms can become dangerous when passengers unintentionally cross restricted areas, especially near the yellow safety line. Our client needed a reliable, camera-based monitoring solution that could help prevent accidents by detecting unsafe movement before it escalated.

We designed and tested a complete sandbox prototype that accurately detects when individuals step into restricted zones—helping strengthen platform safety and supporting future large-scale deployment.

Understanding the Safety Challenge

Metro platforms are high-traffic environments where even a moment’s distraction can put passengers at risk. The client required:

  • A non-intrusive monitoring system
  • Accurate detection of passengers crossing the yellow line
  • A controlled testing environment for validating the concept
  • A foundation for future automated alert systems

The goal was to create an early-warning layer that enhances existing metro safety protocols.

Our Solution

1. Calibrated Camera Setup in a Sandbox Environment

We built a controlled test environment simulating real metro platforms. Cameras were carefully calibrated to understand platform geometry and detect movement in critical zones with precision.

2. Restricted-Zone Monitoring

The system continuously monitored the yellow-line area. When someone crossed into the danger zone, it detected the event instantly—supporting scenarios like:

  • Accidental slips
  • Intentional crossing
  • Overcrowded platform push-through

3. Risk Prevention Through Early Alerts

The detection layer is designed to integrate with future alert mechanisms, enabling metros to respond quickly to unsafe situations before they become incidents.

Impact and Outcome

Our sandbox-tested prototype delivered:

  • A strong proof-of-concept for metro passenger safety
  • A reliable method to detect unsafe movements around restricted zones
  • A research-backed framework that the client can expand into full-scale operational systems

This project shows how intelligent monitoring can significantly reduce human error and improve safety in public transportation systems.
